SL/CO Seminar on Middleware technologies ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ It was agreed that the objective of this seminar is to present an overview of the available Middleware technologies (as a follow-up of the 3 days course on Middeware technologies attended by the project core team on March 1,2,3) The following program is foreseen : (i) Introduction (KRIS) - Explain background and goal of the seminar - Define the Middleware term and the different families of Middleware (ii) OO Middlewares - CORBA (ALEX, KRIS) - (D)COM (ALEX) + comparison with CORBA - RMI (VITO) (iii) Other Middleware Families - MOMs, RTWorks, ... (MARC) - IBus (VITO) (iv) Accelerator Device Model & API (FRANCK) - Model and capabilities - Snapshot of Java API with examples (v) OPC as integration with industrial systems (VITO) (vi) Criteria to consider for choosing a Middleware (MARC) (vii) Conclusions (KRIS) It is possible that the date of the seminar will be pushed one week later (PS Startup) 2. Organization of Middleware Investigations It was agreed that these activies fall in the scope of the Milestone T3 of the project phase I (T3 : "The middleware technology to be evaluated has been chosen"). These activities will typically concentrate on preparing lists of products with their main characteristics such as price, licencing policy, etc. It was decided that ALEX and KRIS will work on this subject. The foreseen date for T3 is July 15, 1999. One should not forget that it depends, of course, on Milestone M2 (all requirements agreed) 3. Requirements Capture ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Two areas of work have been decided : - complete the requirements document with relevent chapters important to consider to select a Middleware product (use EPFL input) - fill the capability requirements part by extracting the relevent information from the Java API technical specification 4. ACTIONS ~~~~~~~~~~ A lot .... - Try to push seminar one week later : Kris - Prepare and send abstract for the Seminar : Kris - Check distribution list of SL/CO seminar : Franck, Kris - Check with EPFL for Slides re-use : Vito, Kris - fill URD capability requirements : Franck, Marc, Vito - Add relevent chapters to URD : Marc - Add date for T3 in Milestone Plan : Marc - Prepare ideas about your slides and slide templates : All 5.
