Integration of Industrial Systems

Industrial components and turn-key solutions are used increasingly in control systems. PLC's are widely accepted as cost-effective way of controlling equipment. SCADA systems are often an integral part of a large subsystem (cryogenics, electrical system). These systems have to be integrated in the control system.

The middleware project decided to use OPC as the integration interface. OPC drivers are available for most industrial controllers and SCADA systems offer OPC server interface.

The middleware project is also investigating the possibility of integrating PLC's directly, without need of OPC driver (and without the need to install a WindowsNT system). ST division is using this approach with PLC's connected to Ethernet and communicating with proxy agents on workstations.
