OPC

OPC (OLE for Process Control)  is an industry standard for communication between SCADA systems and field devices. This standard is promoted by Microsoft and maintained by OPC Foundation. 

Considerable experience with OPC exists at CERN, notably within the JCOP project which conducted tests and evaluated products. 

The OPC Programmers Connection contains additional information and useful links on OPC, including Java and Pearl development, the new plans with XML, etc.

CMW project has developed an OPC gateway, which can be used with any OPC server. This gateway acts as CMW server and OPC client. It is configurable from an ORACLE database in which mapping between the device/property model of CMW and OPC item id's is defided.
